If you select 'Make your own pattern', then click anywhere on the black to put a light. They will be in the order that you put them. If you click on an existing light, it will get deleted. You can also add lights to existing patterns.

Number of lights: 0

Click on 'Switch on lights' and watch. Then try changing the various options, one at a time, to see the different effects. You can make your own pattern or add to an existing pattern.

You can just play around and have fun. But you may also like to try to work out what is happening. The different effects come from the number of colours, the total number of lights and what the step is. The lights are in the order shown (you can change the colours, by the way). So if there are 4 colours, and you chose every 4th light, then only the red ones will show to start with. But it cycles round to the beginning. If there are a multiple of 4 lights in total, then red is all you'll get. But if there are 83 lights (such as in the zigzag), then you will get red lights, then yellow lights, and so on. Try various combinations and see if you can predict what will happen.

There are different types of display, and you may prefer not to show the off bulbs. They will show while the lights are switched off, but once they are switched on, the off bulbs will disappear. This looks prettier, but it's harder to see what is happening! You can also speed up or slow down the flash rate.
