James Alexander Haldane and Mary Joass were the parents of Mary Haldane, the second wife of James Eckford. They were also the parents of Catherine Haldane, wife of George Henry Eckford, James son. (This is not incest! George Eckford was the son of James Eckford's first wife. It is, perhaps, a little odd.)

James Haldane was a noted evangelical Christian, with his brother, Robert Haldane. See articles in Wikipedia and The American Cyclopaedia (1879).
Details concerning the Court Martial of George Henry Eckford and the booklet written by his wife, Catherine about the death of "Little Di" suggest that George and Catherine had similar attitudes.
