Charles II or the Merry Monarch
Previous king: Charles I (father)
The Commonwealth
Reigned: 1660-1685
Next king: James II (brother)
Since the Commonwealth became unpopular, Charles II was brought back as king.
The Royal Society was founded in 1660. This is a famous society of scientists. It was supported by Charles, who was interested in science (see left).
In 1665, there was an outbreak of plague in London. In 1666, this was followed by the Great Fire of London. This burnt many buildings in London. Christopher Wren rebuilt St Paul's Cathedral (see below) and other churches in London, such as St Mary Le Bow (see right). An inscription inside St Paul's, dedicated to the architect, reads, "Lector, si monumentum requiris, circumspice" ("Reader, if you seek a memorial, look around you").
