Plait

Picture of lace

There is no pattern for this! Put a pin in the pillow and wind and hang 2 pairs of bobbins (4 bobbins), so they hang downwards (towards you).

Do continuous half stitch using these two pairs.

You may need to tighten the stitches every now and then.

After the first stitch, the bobbins will no longer be in the same pairs. After the second half stitch, the bobbins will be back in their pairs, but the pairs will have swapped over. (Two half stitches is a cloth stitch and twist.)

You will end up with a plait, made of four threads. Finish by unwinding the bobbins and tying an overhand knot with the threads. (If there is too much thread to do this, trim some off.) Then trim the threads so they look tidy.

This doesn't look very impressive! But it teaches you to wind bobbins, and then to manipulate them to make stitches, to work half stitch, to tighten the stitches, and to tie off.
