The pairs are started on a slope, on false starting pins. The side fans are coloured by the worker pairs, which are the edge pairs on either side. Twist all pairs a couple of times between the diamonds and the fans, to give the shape more strength. Twist the edge workers of the half stitch diamonds 2 or 3 times for the same reason. Tie off pairs with a reef knot to make a neat finish.
In fact, this is such a short piece of lace that you can tie off one pair before hanging the last pair, so technically you could make this with 11 pairs!
