You need to buy a pen which will take apart, and allow you to insert a piece of lace. Harlequin Lace in the UK sells such pens. The lace gets wrapped round the shaft, under the clear plastic sheath. (Don't loose the spring!)

It is important to get the right size of lace for the pen. If it's too small, then it won't wrap right round (but that doesn't really matter). If it's too large, then it might poke out of the top or bottom of the sheath, or you have to wrap the lace over itself. I printed out a blank pattern first, before doing a design on it.
Here are blank grids which I used. Print these out and check them against the pen before making a design, to make sure that your printer has got the correct resolution.

After making the lace, I sewed it onto the pen, because otherwise it tended to coggle inside the transparent sheath. But if you were mounting it on card, you could glue it on.
