You need to buy a ruler which will take apart, and allow you to insert a piece of lace. Harlequin Lace in the UK sells such pens. Pop open the cover, insert the lace, and replace the cover.
It is important to get the right size of lace for the ruler. Too small doesn't really matter. If it's too large, it won't fit in the space provided for it.
Here is the blank grid that I used. Print these out and check them against the pen before making a design, to make sure that your printer has got the correct resolution.
