Name: | Moonstone |
Derivation: | From the moon, because of its glow |
Formula: | KAlSi3O8 |
Description: | A translucent creamy white stone which seems to glow. |
Moonstone is an orthoclase feldspar. "Othoclase" means "straight cleavage". As you can see from the photograph above, moonstone cleaves, or breaks, into squarish chunks.
Moonstone is translucent, and softens the light shining through it to give a moon-like glow. It is a very attractive semi-precious stone. It has gone by this name since ancient times. |
