A pearl is not a mineral. It is made by an oyster. The inner surface of an oyster shell are covered with mother-of-pearl. If any grit gets into an oyster, then the oyster coveres it with the same material, making an oyster. The pearls in the photograph are fresh-water pearls. Most pearls are cultured, which means that the shells have the starter for the pearl introduced deliberately.
