Canadian Apple Cake

I got this recipe from a Canadian, so that's what I'm going to call it! But this is my version as usual! I reduced the amounts by quite a bit, so proportions may be out.

Ingredients

crumble:
       butter
       sugar
       plain flour
       cinnamon

apple layer:
       2 apples
       sugar
       cinnamon

cake:
       butter
       sugar
       self raising flour
       1 egg
       vanilla
       milk

Equipment

Cooking process

Prepare the crumble. melt the butter, add the rest of the ingredients and mix until you get a dry and lumpy mix.
Peel the apples and core and slice. Cook into a puree. Add the sugar and cinammon. (I added too much water, so the end result was a soggy cake!)
Measure out the butter and sugar and . Then beat in the egg, then the , then the milk. You end up with a runny batter.
Line the bottom of the baking tin with baking paper (this is optional, but makes it a lot easier to get the cake out afterwards).
Pour in half (or more) of the cake batter into the tin. Add the apple puree. Add the rest of the batter. Sprinkle the crumble on top.
Put the tin in the oven. This needs to cook for about 50 minutes. At the end, the cake should be risen and brown. When I did it, it ended up soggy underneath, so a pudding rather than a cake. But nice!

This time I split the cake mix into two standard round tins, and put the crumble mix on top of one. I cooked them separately, same temperature, same length of time (45 mins). I cooked the apples with less water, and some butter, and didn't bother to puree them. Then I constructed the cake. I didn't use baking paper, so getting it out of the tins was a bit of a problem.
Verdict - nice, and less soggy. More of a cake and less of a pudding. But the crumble layer was too thick (as the round times were smaller), so maybe halve that.
