Examples from designs from a pattern book dated 1597

I made this small bag using the goat and swan patterns. It is made using 14 stitches to the inch canvas, so is very small, about 3 inches square. This is deliberate, as I made it to hold my small MP3 player with its earphones.

I chose the swan, as there is a notorious swan which lives on the River Cam in Cambridge, who attacks the college rowing eights as they try to row down the river. He has been called Mr Asbo. (For non-British readers, an Asbo is an Anti-Social Behaviour Order, a legal restraint on badly behaved people. I must add that no-one has issued an ASbo for the swan!) The original design reminded me strongly of Mr Asbo, as it catches the stance of an angry swan very well.
