Colour in regular tessellations
M C Escher not only fitted repeated patterns together,
he flipped them and rotated them.
In Maths, these are called wallpaper groups.
There are 17 of them.

Islamic tessellations are zellige.

Normally tessellations repeat a pattern.
Roger Penrose has found tiles which do not repeat!
