Fruit - Red Currant

Red currant grow on a bush. It is a perennial, and drops its leaves over winter, but doesn't die back.

You prune the red currant by cutting back some of the new wood to stop it getting too big.

My old red curant bush gave a large crop, but eventually it died. The replacement hasn't yet started producing much fruit yet, although I did get a pot of red currant jelly from it.

Black currants are similar to red currant, apart from the look and taste of the fruit. I find them too strong tasting.

My main incentive for growing red currants is to make red currant jelly. You can use them in summer pudding, but I prefer raspberries.
