| Grandfather and Father of John Geddes (III) |
My parents' research didn't really go back further than John Geddes (III). There was a family tradition that his father and grandfather were both called John Geddes, hence the numbering. However, Bob King has been doing some research using Scotland's People, and discovered that John Geddes II doesn't exist. He has found the following information:
He married Margaret Wilson on 30 March 1709 at Canisbay. Their son was George Geddes, who was born in Watten on 13 July 1718.
As mentioned above, he was born to John Geddes and Margaret Wilson in Watten on 13 July 1718.
George Geddes and Jannet Sutherland were married at Watten on 12 July 1733. They had 6 children, all born in Watten:
| Name | born | comments | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Margaret | 1737 | 10 May | |
| John | 1747 | 25 March | infant death? |
| Marjory | 1751 | 17 October | |
| John | 1753 | 14 November | known on this website as John Geddes (III) |
| James | 1757 | 8 July | |
| William | 1759 | 21 April | |
The following was among family papers. It was obviously this document which started the whole John son of John son of John business. I tend to distrust family stories...
