Maltese lace mat

This mat is made of cream silk. It has small Maltese crosses round the edge. It is made of two pieces stitched together, an outer edge with the Maltese crosses, and an inner piece including the corners.

The Maltese crosses are in cloth stitch with flowers with tally petals in between. There are a few plaits. There are spiders.

This lace came from my grandmother, Violet Dibblee (nee Geddes) 1871-1961. She was in Malta from 1908 to 1911.

This piece is too big to fit in my scanner (which is how I am reproducing the lace) so I can only show pieces of it on the right. The entire piece is photographed below to show its shape.
