Machine lace mat

This is an imitation of a bobbin lace mat. However, it is too big and the curves to left and right cut through the pattern as well, rather than being part of it. This means that a larger pattern has been cut to shape. Various parts are made in a different way, which also shows that this is machine lace.

Scroll to bottom of page for further explanation (or click here).

This piece is too big to fit in my scanner (which is how I am reproducing the lace) so I can only show part of it on the right, but it is symmetrical. The entire piece is photographed below to show its shape.

Machine lace mat

Reasons why this is machine lace

Machine-made lace - half stitch

In the half stitch, the threads go diagonally, but not horizontally. If you look carefully, they also do not go under-and-over in the correct way. A very close look shows very thin threads binding the other threads together.

Machine-made lace - tallies

Here is one of the raised tallies. The tally itself is very densely woven, so you can't see the detail. This is done using very thin threads - hard to see, but there is one in the cloth stitch to the left of the tally, on the left. The picture on the right shows the underneath of the tally, and again, these thin threads are visible in the cloth stitch.
