Machine lace

This is an imitation of a Bucks Point bobbin lace insertion, but various parts are made in a different way, which shows that this is machine lace.

Scroll to bottom of page for further explanation (or click here).

This was in a sewing box of my aunt, Doris Dibblee (nee Mitchell), 1896-1968. I don't know where she got it.

Reasons why this is machine lace

Machine-made lace - cloth stitch

If you look carefully, you can see that there are pairs of passives being worked as a single thread. This means that the under-and-overs are not regular - sometimes, the workers go over or under two threads rather than one.

You can also see that the net is not made in the correct way.

There are different thicknesses of thread. Some passives are thick and some are thin.
