Pattern 142 - Spiders and cobwebs

Picture of lace

When I designed pattern 141, I thought it looked like cobwebs, especially as it had spiders. This pattern is an attempt to deliberately design cobwebs.

Pattern:
   Pattern of lace

Style: Torchon

Stitches:
   half stitch
   cloth stitch
   cloth stitch and twist
   plait
   twist pair

Details:
   fan headside (yellow)
   torchon ground (grey)
   8 legged spider (green)

Description:

Follow the links above for explanation of how to work the different parts of the lace.

The start requires that you start the pairs inside the lace:

Start of lace

At each starting pin (marked with a pink dot), there are two pairs. One goes downwards in a normal way. The other is used to work the top fan. You will need to turn the pillow to work this. There are four pairs at the top right. Two go downwards, with one pair being the green pair to make the workers to colour the right-hand fans. Two go sideways to make the top fan, again, with one pair being workers. Click here for a fuller description. Since two pairs need to span the gap between the fans, it is best to work them in a short plait. The bottom of the lace is finished in a similar way. Click here for comments on this.

The 'cobweb' is just made of torchon ground stitches, but the pins are not in the normal places. This digram shows which way the threads travel. This is not always obvious, as some of the threads travel sideways!

Pattern of lace

I think that once you have figured out the top half of the cobweb, you will manage the bottom half. I assume you that it is easier to work than this diagram looks!

The fans are supposed to be leaves, so I coloured them green. The gree workers for the fans need to start at the edge, and then they will travel from fan to fan. Wind more thread onto these bobbins as they do more work. The rest of the threads are grey, to represent the cobwebs (and the spiders).
