The diagonal start is easier with false starting pins, which are provided. The pattern is made of three parts, with the pillow turned at the dark grey line - see making a corner shape, from a mat. The start and the finish mark a square gap, where you fit the mat or handkerchief to sew it.
The advantage of doing a corner with three sections rather than two is that the centre of the pattern is a whole section rather than the boundary between two sections. It also means that the mat or handkerchief can be fitted inside the lace, rather than the lace being sewn over the corner, or even replacing part of the corner. It does stick out a bit, but that is also attractive.
I haven't sewn on this example myself, but the photo below gives an idea of what it might look like.
