This is mundillo, or lace from Panama. Click here for more patterns. Pattern 224 is another Panama tally pattern.
Patterns:
Bobbins: 12 pairs (3 white pairs, 3 yellow pairs, 3 blue pairs, 3 red pairs) - but please note that here we are dealing with threads not pairs. So a more accurate description would be 6 white threads, 6 yellow threads, 6 blue threads and 6 red threads.
Style: Similar to English Midland
Description:
Follow the links above for explanation of how to work the different parts of the lace.
This is just a collection of tallies, joined by lazy joins. Tallies are tricky to do, so this is not perhaps for beginners. (On the other hand, they give you lots of practice in doing tallies!)
The clever part of the pattern is the use of colour. A tally uses two pairs, or four threads. Here, each thread in the tally is a different colour. For each tally, the worker thread colours the whole, and the other threads are passives, hidden inside. Please note that this particular use of colour means that the pairs are split up, even at the start, so really they are not pairs at all. It is just that lacemakers tend to think that way!
This technique means that you can produce flowers of different colours - very attractive! It would be easy to make more complicated patterns of flowers as well, since you have complete freedom at the start of each tally which colour it should be.
