Description:
My sister-in-law bought this piece of lace in France. I think it is Mechlin, and I wanted to see if I could reproduce some elements of it. This page shows my second attempt. It isn't very good!

After my first attempt at Mechline lace (pattern 428), I had to sort out the grid problem with the Mechlin ground. The obvious thing was to turn the Bucks Point grid round, so the grid to stretched length-wise rather than sideways. But then honeycomb won't work... So I went back to the original lace (above) and saw that it used twisted hole ground rather than honeycomb. Aha!
This is rather a messy lace. I messed up the start, the straight lines of the gimp are unattractive (in my eyes), and I made a mistake with the gimps towards the bottom anyway. Still, the grid looks much better, although this lace doesn't really have enough Mechlin ground is see it properly. There is still one problem, though. I put a pin in the middle of the Mechline ground (because I'm thinking of it as double Torchon), and the pin shows up as a hole in the lace. Machline ground doesn't have this hole, and it makes it look too similar to twisted hole ground, which SHOULD have a hole! The cloth stitch is still a bit sparse as well.
