So, there are two lines meeting at right angles, and lines drawn from one line to the other in that specific pattern.

Follow the links above for explanation of how to work the different parts of the lace.
The lace pattern is made of 4 of the mathematical shapes, overlapping together. Every line is a pair of threads, and where one line crosses another, you work cloth stitch (although cloth stitch and twist might have been a better choice!) This is definitely tricky! See this decription for a step by step explanation. The idea is that one curve overlaps another, and is overlapped by yet another. Whether it was worth doing is another matter...
