Follow the links above for explanation of how to work the different parts of the lace. The edges are really triangles, but the working is the same as a cloth fan, so I've called it a flat cloth fan!

See cross, starting from middle for different ways to make this shape. You can work each arm separately, joining each arm to the previous. If you prefer taking the threads across the centre, the following diagram shows where the threads start.

The red numbers are for the bottom arm, and also provide half of the pairs for the middle arms. The blue numbers are for the top arm, and also provide the other half of the pairs for the middle arms. If you wind these all as bobbins, it will need 18 pairs.

I haven't marked the colours of the threads. The flat fans are coloured by the workers, so it will be the edge pair which needs to be blue, and the rest of the pairs to be yellow.

I was asked for patterns for crosses by someone who wished to make one for every member of her prayer group. This seemed to be quite a lot of lacemaking, so I designed some small crosses. This was the smallest! I'm not sure if it worked, but it was an interesting exercise. One arm is longer than the others to give a Latin cross.
