This shows the directions of the plaits. The cucumbers are marked with downwards arrows, since they are worked parallel to the trails, using workers from the trails either side (rather than tallies which would leave one tail and join the next).

I made this design from an old pattern that came with an old (straw-filled) roller pillow I bought some time ago.

There is another version here, and here. This version came about after experts politely pointed out to me that I didn't understand how Beds lace worked! The trails should be joined with kisses and cucumbers, rather than the tallies that I'd used. Here, the trails keep the same passives throughout. But the trail workers leave one trail and join another (via a kiss) or leave and then rejoin the same trail (via a cucumber). The plaits (or legs or brides) work through the trails in cloth stitch as marked (the trail's workers become an extra passive pair while this is happening).
