Description:

Follow the links above for explanation of how to work the different parts of the lace. The start is on a diagonal, so I have marked false starting pins. The top two pairs (workers and edge pair for fan headsides) are purple, and so are the passive path for the twisted footside. The gimps are purple as well (in fact, I used a pair of threads for each gimp rather than a thicker thread). The rest of the threads are blue.

The cloth fans have all the passives twisted half way through each fan.

I have made my own fan sticks for this fan. See pattern 247 for how to do this.

This fan uses a different grid from both pattern 247 and pattern 246. It is not based on part of a mat, like pattern 247. It is a strip, bent round like pattern 246, but using a completely different grid. You can see this, since the pin holes near to inner edge are similar distances apart to those at the outer edge. This involved a certain amount of thought concerning the grid! You don't need to worry about this - just work the pattern, starting at the top and working downwards. However, there are some consequences to this grid. The shapes at top and bottom (as you work it) are more distorted than those at the centre. More importantly, this fan is not equal width. It is slightly broader in the middle than at the top or bottom. This didn't matter as I made my own pattern, but it could cause problems for a standard set of fan sticks! It caused me problems when attaching the sticks, as it was a little tricky to work out how long the fan sticks should be, where they should cross and where to glue the fan.

I was careful in this pattern not to have anything too interesting at start and end, since one end will get hidden by the sticks. I used thinner thread, and was careful to position the holes in the flowers between the sticks, and diamonds where the sticks were, so the sticks did not show through.

Fan stick length from hinge to end - 3 inches. Width of lace (max) - 1.75 inches. More an ornament than a real fan!
